On 13th November, 1914, the 1st Somerset Light Infantry battalion of 11 Brigade, 4th Division were relieved from the front line at La Plus Douve Farm, near Messines and moved back to reserve trenches in Ploegsteert Wood. The weather was atrocious and these new trenches were 3 feet deep in mud. On 16th November they moved into front line trenches on the eastern edge of the wood. The conditions made things very trying, especially bringing up food and other supplies to the men in the trenches, not to mention the shelling and sniper fire that they had to contend with on a daily basis. One of their casualties while here was Harry Jones who lost his life on 19th November. |
